Scientific Officer (GIS)

About the role

The International Seabed Authority is seeking a Scientific Officer (GIS) to join the Office of Stewardship, Environment and Resources (OSER). The role supports the development, implementation and maintenance of geospatial data and services that underpin marine scientific research and environmental management in the Area.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and maintain geospatial data governance policies, standards and quality‑control procedures.
• Capture and archive definitive geospatial information for exploration, exploitation and relinquishment activities.
• Perform technical verification of coordinates, blocks, cells and maps submitted by applicants or contractors.
• Record locations of marine assets such as geological features, protected areas, maritime boundaries and scientific research sites.
• Provide map services and trend analysis for internal and external stakeholders.
• Coordinate creation of geospatial guidance documents to improve data sharing and long‑term preservation.
• Execute data migration to a self‑hosted geodatabase server and support related structural adjustments.
• Develop automation tools for routine GIS workflows.

Required profile

• Ability to work under the overall guidance of the Secretary General and direct supervision of the OSER Director.
• Authority to act within delegated authority for geospatial data management.
