Assistant Buyer

About the role

PriceSmart is hiring an Assistant Buyer for a temporary position of 5 months in Jamaica. You will support the buyer with supplier-related merchandise sourcing and item/department development, helping drive sales and gross margin revenue. The role involves supplier visits, seasonal planning and working closely with the buyer.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the buyer in selecting and purchasing products to meet inventory needs
• Research potential suppliers and evaluate products for quality, pricing and availability
• Place orders with vendors, keeping records of inventory, orders and deliveries
• Track shipments and deliveries so orders are fulfilled on time
• Review product specifications and pricing to help negotiate with suppliers
• Maintain supplier relationships for consistent quality and pricing
• Prepare reports on inventory, sales trends and product performance
• Communicate with logistics, finance and marketing teams
• Help manage the purchasing budget and identify cost-saving opportunities
• Attend trade shows, supplier meetings or conferences when needed
• Visit suppliers to review food safety standards and good manufacturing practices

Required profile

• 2 years of retail experience, or 1 year of purchasing experience, or 6 months with a BA/BS degree
• Bachelor's degree in Business, Retail, Supply Chain Management or a related field (preferred)
• Experience in a retail, buying or procurement role (preferred)
• Availability to work in person in Jamaica; some travel may be required
• Ability to take direction and complete tasks with minimal supervision, within deadlines

Required skills

• Experience with AS/400
• Strong Word and Excel skills
• Strong math skills
• Purchasing software experience preferred
